How to Play the C chord on Banjo in Open G Standard Tuning
Oct 25, 2023The C chord is one of the fundamental chords you'll need to learn on the banjo if you want to play in open G tuning. Along with G and D, it makes up the I-IV-V chord progression that forms the basis for many classic banjo tunes. Knowing how to play a solid C chord is crucial if you want to be able to jam along in open G.
How to Play the C Major Chord on Banjo in Open G Tuning
First, make sure your banjo is tuned to open G:
- G - The 5th string (the short string with the highest tone)
- D - The 4th string (lowest tone)
- G - The 3rd string
- B - The 2nd string
- D - The first string
For the C major chord, you'll need to press down three strings with your fingers:
- Use your index finger to press down the second string at the first fret. This turns the open B on the second string into an C note.
- Use your ring finger to press down the 1st string at the 2nd fret. This turns the open D on the 1st string into an E note.
- Use your middle finger to press down the fourth string at the 2nd fret. This turns the open D on the fourth string into an E note.
The other strings should be left open:
- 3rd string: G
- 5th string: G
Strum all 5 strings, and you've got a C major chord!
Here's a chord diagram showing the C major chord fingering:
Here's how to understand the chord diagram:
- The strings are displayed left to right, from the 4th string on the far left to the 1st string on the far right.
- An open circle means leave that string open without pressing it.
- The numbers 1-4 indicate which finger to use to press the string down. 1 is index, 2 is middle, etc.

Some players leave off the 4th string altogether and just strum strings 1-3. This sounds great if you don't need that strong base note.
